Steal the bacon

Grade level: Elementary / Secondary
Players: 8 to 20
Duration: At least 30 minutes

Stimulating group activity to get people together, focused, challenged, having fun and ready for action. This activity can be performed indoor and outdoor.

  • Participants are divided into two equal teams. Each team is asked to stand on a line facing the other team with about 6 meters between them.
  • The players on each line are numbered (1, 2, 3, etc.)
  • A handkerchief, a ball or some other object is paced in the center between the two lines.
  • The monitor or teacher calls out a number and the payers on each team with that number runs to the center to grab the handkerchief (or object). The player who grabs it then tries to return to his team before being tagged by his opponent.
  • If she or he is successful (returns to her/his line before being tagged), this team wins a point. If she or he is tagged then the other team wins a point.
  • The trick is to develop a better strategy than your opponent in grabbing the handkerchief, adding to the fun.
  • Once the participants are familiar with the activity the monitor or teacher may call out more than one number (5, 3 and 10) and the players on each team with those numbers then race to the center adding more excitement.
  • The first team to reach a set number of points, usually 15, wins.
